This is definitely not a stock “Whodunnit”.
Harriet has been trampled over by the world and left in the mud, and I love how Sayers understands the way she would snap and snarl at the first hand that reached out to help her, and resent its very kindness.
I also really enjoy how the discussion of her work features in this, how she’s clearly transitioning from a more jigsaw puzzle dorotgy of mystery novel, to one where her characters are humanized.
Lord Peter is relatively scarce, so Harriet is center stage for most of the story. He unravels in a day the problem she has worked on for months. As she wrestles with the case, trying to narrow down the list of suspects and avert a major scandal, Harriet is forced to examine her ambivalent feelings about love and marriage, along with her attraction to academia as an intellectual and emotional refuge.
So it was with a bit of trepidation that I set about reading it again this year, realizing that I was now nearly twenty years older than Harriet is in the book; could I possibly still relate to her? More importantly, Dorothy L. Last time I’d felt like the reveal came out of left field. I wonder what unspeakable depths of awfulness can only be expressed by the polite symbol of Peter’s embraces?
I wanted something with heart, but not saccharine. I think Sayers is arguing for give and take; dorkthy true even today that women make a certain sacrifice, far more than men do, when they enter into a marriage the physical and emotional effects of childbearing and the change in status are still very real, despite our so-called progress and I think Sayers is seeking, not so much an end to such sacrifice but an acknowledgement that it is real and should not be entered into lightly.

I could so relate to Harriet’s discomfort with dirothy a foot in both worlds — unwilling to dedicate herself wholly to academic life, but also uncomfortably aware of how a smart woman who marries and has a family is judged by both society and her intellectual peers.
It’s still just out of reach.
