Set during WWI, the world is a little askew. While much of this book is very “PG” it doesn’t exactly shy away from the destruction of war.

While in Alek’s old hotel room, Alek confesses to Deryn that he is really heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. Good because he was taking charge of his life in a way that made me want to stand up and cheer, bad because I thought his snobbishness was super amusing. Although this book has a slightly more darker and sinister feel than Leviathan, there are several moments of levity and mirth to provide a nice overall balance and that prevents the story from becoming bleak.

See more by Scott Westerfeld. Alek is so hopelessly oblivious. Deryn westerfels a girl posing as a boy in the British Air Service, and Alek is the heir to an empire posing as a commoner. I could enjoy the culture without it getting too cumbersome to the story. So in this a YA fanatics Bauer westetfeld up easily but Klopp seems to be badly injured. But on the whole, it’s an absolute blast and I love it. Alek and Dylan work well together and they have a great friendship.

The plot, though interesting, is secondary to the great characters Westerfeld develops and the fascinating backdrop of alternate history he unfolds.
