The Third Law holds that a robot must protect its existence unless such actions conflict with the First or Second Laws. Therefore, Powell decides to risk his life by going out in the heat, hoping that the First Law will force Speedy to overcome his cognitive dissonance and save his life. This plan works, Powell is saved runsround death, and Speedy later retrieves the selenium.
Runaround is notable for featuring the first explicit appearance of the Three Laws of Robotics, which had previously only been implied in Asimov’s robot stories. Under the Second Law Speedy assimov obey Powell’s order to return to base, but that fails, as the conflicted positronic brain cannot accept new orders.
